A Beautiful Voice
She is a true romantic with a beauty of presence and voice. Martha Cares adores the arts; both visual and musical.
She grew up in Grand Rapids loving Broadway musicals and vocal performances of Julie Andrews. As a child, Cares devoted hours to listening to music and singing songs by theater composers such as Andrew Lloyd Webber. "I had a portable record-player," the soprano soloist recalls. "I had many albums directed by Harold Prince." Prince is a Tony Award-winning director and producer of Broadway classics such as "Phantom of the Opera" and "Fiddler on the Roof." Cares never dreamed that someday she would travel with the National Broadway Tour of "Phantom of the Opera." The operatic artist was cast in two roles: the role of The Confidante and The Wardrobe Mistress. She performed with the Phantom tour from 1994-1997.
Her voice is featured on McDonald's "I'm Lovin' It" commercials and on television commercials for the Disney film "Narnia," which began airing in December. Other commercials include the Clio Award-winning national television campaigns for United Airlines and Proctor & Gamble's Cheer laundry detergent.
Cares has performed locally as a guest solo artist with Southwest Michigan Symphony, LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra, Plymouth Chorale, not to mention the Chicago Opera Theatre and symphonies across America, as well. "Martha is a wonderfully communicative artist," says Philip Bauman, conductor of LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra. "Her vocal expressions and nuances are endless. She holds the audience captive with her communicative power."
Bauman and Cares worked together with Chicago Opera Theatre when he was conductor of "Don Giovanni." Cares performed the role of Zerlina. She earned a master's of music with distinction from the University of Michigan, School of Music in Ann Arbor.
Cares went on to perform as Susanna in "The Fan"; Tebaldo in "Don Carlo," Gretel in "Hansel and Gretel," Papagena in "The Magic Flute" at Lyric Opera Center. She has appeared as a soloist with Milwaukee Opera Company, Opera Lenawee Michigan, Chicago Opera Theatre, Grant Park Music Festival, Greater Miami Opera, University of Michigan and Light Opera Works.
