History of Ragtime!
An astonishing show of only-in-Chicago artistry - the ragtime of Reginald Robinson
Reginald grew up in the Henry Horner Homes on the South Side of Chicago. As a child, he first acquired a love of old jazz music listening to Chuck Shaden’s radio programs. In 1986, Reginald heard a jazz group visiting his school play Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer,” and he was hooked.
His mother bought him a piano, and he began teaching himself to play. With just a few lessons, Robinson’s skills took off and by age 17, he had started composing ragtime music. In 1992, Robinson began his public performances with an appearance at the Green Mill jazz club. In 2004, Robinson was recognized with a McArthur Foundation “genius” grant, which financed further studies in ragtime and composing.
Robinson is now one of America’s leading scholars and performers of ragtime music. The first half of Robinson’s concert will cover some of the highlights from the history of ragtime. The second half will feature Robinson’s own compositions that move the ragtime style into the 21st Century.
“Reginald Robinson ranks...as the top ragtime composer of the past 20 years and is sure to be a major force in keeping this 100-year-old music alive."
-– Scott Yanow, journalist and jazz music critic
